Tick Alert! They’re Out & About! What Dog Owners Need to Know in Tick Season for Dogs, and How to Prepare
Tick season is well and truly here. With the warmer weather and longer grass, ticks are more active and looking for a host (your dog!) after walks in fields, woodland, and overgrown areas.
Here’s a simple guide to staying one step ahead:
1. Do a Quick Tick Check Post-Walk (every time)
Run your hands through your dog’s coat slowly and thoroughly when it’s tick season for dogs. As a result, focus on:
• Ears (inside and around)
• Neck & under collar
• Armpits
• Between toes
• Belly & groin area
2. Know what a Tick Looks & Feels Like
Ticks can start off tiny (like a pinhead) and grow as they feed. They often feel like a small, firm bump on the skin.
They are usually brown or black in colour.
3. Remove Ticks Safely
Use a proper tick removal tool if you can. Because they are popular when it’s tick season for dogs, buy in advance. These are available at any pet store, online, e.g. Amazon, or sometimes, a local chemist. For our doggy mums and dads, you can pick one up from Scenterbarks reception.
Slide your tick remover under the tick and twist gently and steadily pull – don’t squeeze or pull too hard, or without twisting, as this can leave parts behind or increase infection risk.
4. Clean the Tick Area Afterwards
Use pet-safe antiseptic or warm soapy water, and keep an eye on the bite spot for a few days, looking for any signs of infection or irritation. And, if you do spot anything untoward, it’s worth checking with your vet if you are worried.
5. Tick Prevention is Key
Make sure your dog is up to date with vet-recommended flea and tick prevention. Different products suit different dogs, so check with your vet if unsure. Also, there are either medicated options, or you can opt for more natural remedies, for example Billy No Mates, with liquid, powder and chew options.
6. Be extra cautious with Ticks in High-Risk Areas
Long grass, bracken, woodland paths, and rural fields are hotspots. Stick to paths where possible and avoid letting dogs plough through dense vegetation.
If the grass is growing, the Spring has sprung, or the Summer months are here, then you know it’s tick season for dogs, and you can guarantee ticks!
