Quick Enrichment Activities Every Dog Will Love

Keep Your Dog Happy, Healthy and Mentally Stimulated

Looking for simple ways to keep your dog entertained? These quick dog enrichment activities are easy to set up using everyday household items and are a fantastic way to challenge your dog’s mind while having fun together.

Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise. Enrichment activities help to reduce stress, prevent boredom, encourage natural behaviours, and improve your dog’s problem-solving skills. A mentally stimulated dog is often happier, calmer, and more confident.

Here are some of our favourite enrichment ideas that you can try today.

Why Enrichment is Important for Dogs

Enrichment encourages your dog to think, sniff, explore and solve problems. These quick dog enrichment activities can:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Prevent boredom and destructive behaviours
  • Build confidence
  • Encourage natural instincts such as sniffing and foraging
  • Improve learning and problem-solving skills
  • Strengthen the bond between you and your dog

The best part? Most enrichment games take just a few minutes to prepare.

1. Treat Bottle Challenge

Take an empty plastic bottle, remove the lid, and place a few small treats inside. Roll or gently toss the bottle and let your dog figure out how to get the treats out.

Top Tip: Always supervise your dog and remove the bottle if it becomes damaged.

2. Cardboard Treasure Box

Fill a cardboard box with shredded paper and hide a handful of treats underneath. Your dog will enjoy digging, sniffing and searching until they discover their reward.

This is a brilliant game for encouraging natural foraging behaviour.

3. Play “Find It”

Hide a favourite toy or tasty treat somewhere around your home or garden and ask your dog to “Find it!”

Start with easy hiding places before making the game more challenging as your dog gains confidence.

4. The Towel Treat Puzzle

One of our favourite enrichment games is simply rolling treats inside a towel. For an extra challenge, tie the towel into a loose knot.

Your dog will love sniffing, nudging and pawing their way to the hidden rewards.

5. Egg Box or Cereal Box Puzzle

Place treats inside an empty egg box or cereal box and close it up. Your dog must first work out how to open the box before discovering the tasty prize inside.

This activity is excellent for encouraging problem-solving skills.

6. Bottle in a Sock

Place an empty plastic water bottle inside an old sock and let your dog investigate.

The crinkly sounds and unusual texture make this a surprisingly exciting toy for many dogs.

As always, supervise play and remove the toy if it starts to break apart.

7. Try a Lick Mat

Lick mats are fantastic for keeping dogs occupied while also helping them relax. Simply spread soft food such as dog-safe peanut butter, natural yoghurt (xylitol-free), wet food or mashed banana across the textured surface.

Benefits of lick mats include:

  • Helping reduce boredom
  • Encouraging calm behaviour
  • Making meals last longer
  • Providing excellent mental stimulation

If you’re looking for one, Lick Mats are available from our Scenterbarks Reception.

Make Enrichment Part of Your Dog’s Daily Routine

You don’t need expensive toys to provide enrichment for your dog. Many of the best and quick dog enrichment activities use items you already have at home. Even spending just 10–15 minutes each day on enrichment can make a big difference to your dog’s wellbeing.

Remember to always supervise your dog when using household items and remove anything that becomes damaged.
